Know Your Rights

Before you join a union

Belonging to a union is not free: it involves a monthly subscription. FYI, Unite’s annualised membership fees cost nearly £220 pa. Most unions charge a membership or subscription fee of varying amounts.

At Collins, our goal is prioritising growth, innovation, well-being, development, and collaboration to create a fulfilling, inclusive, and purpose-driven workplace that supports both individual and organisational success.

Consider whether any particular union can really achieve the points that you really care about, truly represent your needs, and make them a central focus. If not, those objectives might be better addressed through open and meaningful dialogue with your employer or your SCC.

What you need to know

  • You are not required to speak with union organisers
  • You have the right to refuse to join a union
  • You, and only you, can decide whether to join, or refuse to join, a union
  • You cannot be threatened or pressured into joining a union
  • You should only consider joining a union if you actually support the union or want to form one
  • You can change your mind after joining a union and cancel your membership.

Membership implications

Unions have all types of different focuses and priorities. Here is some important information an organiser is likely not sharing with you that you need to know….

Did you know…?

  • Collective bargaining binds all employees to one negotiated agreement; there can be no individual or independent agreements.
  • In circumstances where the Union and the Company cannot align on terms, members may face a ballot on whether to take industrial action. While you may personally disagree with a vote on industrial action but experience peer pressure to strike. Additionally, that strike may not be about matters that you care greatly about.
  • If you take strike action, you may lose pay.
  • Threats or coercion from anyone attempting to force you to join a union is unlawful

Again….

Union organisers may call, send post, email or text you or visit you at home. It is your decision whether you decide to speak with them or respond to them.
