Planning, Modeling & Logistics

BBN produces advanced technology in mission planning, modeling, and logistics to reduce operator load, improve mission accuracy, and increase the operational tempo and agility of military planning. BBN’s Analysis of Mobility Platform and Transportation Feasibility Assessment (AMP-TFA) software, both U.S. Transportation Command programs of record, provide best-of-breed planning solutions for the deployment and employment of resources to theaters around the world. BBN’s decades of experience developing modeling and simulation environments in desktop, cloud-based, web-based, game-oriented and container platforms allow its teams to deliver advanced modeling, planning and algorithms for aerial refueling and rocket-based global movement of materiel, force projection, acquisitions and more to support a wide variety of critical mission needs. BBN’s solutions develop, analyze and refine large numbers of plans within minutes or hours – capable of adapting as the battlespace or mission priorities do. To optimize operational planning and logistics, BBN’s efforts focus on mission planning, rapid course of action creation, supply chain modeling and global mobility modeling and analysis.

Mission planning

BBN equips decision-makers with the agility and confidence to adapt to dynamic mission environments and outpace emerging threats. BBN’s approach accelerates plan development, enhances plan quality and improves situational understanding by leveraging intelligent auto-planners, game-based interfaces, automated exploration and advanced analytics. While traditional planning cycles require manual problem-solving by a diverse team of specialized personnel to generate a single mission plan, BBN delivers the speed, quality and adaptability today’s combat operations demand.

Showcase Program

Fight Tonight

Program goal

Enhance real-time strategy execution for air attack scenario planning, enabling military leaders to swiftly adapt to evolving threats across complex battlespaces.

Challenge

Traditional planning cycles are too slow for today’s fast-paced missions. High-stakes environments demand quick decision-making, but factors like adverse weather, communication interruptions and unexpected adversary tactics introduce delays and uncertainty.

Solution

Develop AI-driven operational planning tools that integrate game-based collaborative planning and scenario layering to quickly create multiple strategies. These tools provide decision-makers with visually intuitive options, enabling faster evaluation and development of courses of action. This effort is in collaboration with BreakAway Games, CACI International Inc., Kestrel Institute and Raytheon, an RTX business.

Benefit

Increases operational speed, strengthens agile command and control and improves mission outcomes by equipping decision-makers with actionable insights.

Rapid course of action creation

BBN enables faster, more effective decision-making and enhances operational flexibility in rapidly changing situations. BBN is developing and deploying technology that allows for the rapid creation of courses of action, allowing for immediate adjustments based on available assets or those that can be repurposed. Already deployed in all five air defense sectors in North America, this technology allows personnel to quickly respond to unexpected events, emerging threats or targets of opportunity in dynamic operational environments.

Showcase Program

Anytime Reasoning and Analysis for Kill-Web Negotiation and Instantiation across Domains (ARAKNID)

Program goal

Build a battlefield decision support tool that rapidly generates and evaluates courses of action in real-time, adapting to dynamic, multi-domain environments with emerging threats and pop-up events.

Challenge

Military commanders must quickly interpret an overwhelming volume of data from hundreds of sensors and platforms to make informed decisions. The speed, volume and complexity of this information often exceed human capacity for real-time analysis, making it difficult to respond effectively to emerging threats, creating gaps in situational awareness and slowing operational response.

Solution

Develop an AI-powered planning tool built on a DevSecOps framework, integrating real-world air domain sensor data to generate, evaluate and visualize multiple courses of action for informed, timely decision-making. This tool will allow commanders to process high-volume data in real time, respond to emerging threats and maintain tactical agility across multi-domain operations.

Benefit

By creating seamless cross-domain connectivity across platforms like satellites, autonomous vehicles, robotics and logistics, this technology will strengthen integrated deterrence. It equips decision-makers with timely, actionable insights, enabling faster, more informed decisions and improving operational efficiency in complex, multi-domain environments.

Supply chain modeling

BBN strengthens the resilience of critical supply lines, supporting mission-critical needs during both wartime and peacetime. By identifying vulnerabilities, optimizing logistics and enhancing supply chain flexibility, BBN’s advanced modeling tools enables rapid responses to disruptions. These tools simulate various scenarios and provide real-time insights, helping maintain robust, adaptive supply chains that uphold military readiness, economic stability and diplomatic strength, even in the face of fragile supply networks.

Global mobility modeling and analysis

BBN supports sustained operational readiness by modeling the efficient deployment of resources across the globe. From aircraft, ships and railcars to refueling tankers, personnel and critical materials, BBN’s advanced modeling and analysis tools optimize asset positioning to ensure resources are available where and when they are most needed. By providing insights into mobility capabilities and risks, BBN enables mission planners and analysts to address challenges such as contested environments and limitations in assets, personnel and infrastructure, ensuring operational readiness in ever-changing environments.

Showcase Program

Analysis of Mobility Platform (AMP)

Program goal

Develop a simulation-based platform to model the movement of assets, equipment and personnel in support of U.S. Transportation Command (USTRANSCOM) requirements.

Challenge

Coordinating the movement of personnel, equipment and supplies across vast distances requires the ability to accurately model the Defense Transportation System and U.S. movement assets, optimize deliveries to meet USTRANSCOM requirements and anticipate potential disruptions while adapting quickly. These operations depend on highly interconnected logistics networks, where a single point of failure can impact a wide range of deliveries. Understanding how disruptions unfold and influence timelines, capacity and coordination across domains is critical to improving future logistics planning and resilience.

Solution

Create a simulation platform that combines operational data with advanced modeling techniques to evaluate mobility strategies within the continental U.S. and operational theaters. AMP is designed to generate realistic representations of transport routes, infrastructure constraints and deployment timelines — enabling planners to test scenarios, analyze results, identify potential issues and adapt plans under evolving conditions.

Benefit

The platform equips USTRANSCOM operational research analysts with a robust adaptive planning capability — improving foresight, resource utilization and mission readiness by anticipating bottlenecks and testing alternatives before and after operations for continuous improvement and assessment.
