P&WC Leading the Way in Engine Oil Analysis Technology
By Pratt & Whitney Customer Service
Guided by customer feedback, P&WC continues enhancing its powerful Oil Analysis Technology to make its actionable engine maintenance insights more detailed and easier to understand.
Supporting Customers with Data from Oil Analysis
P&WC’s Oil Analysis Technology is an OEM-backed engine monitoring service that supports proactive maintenance for almost all P&WC engine models. For over ten years, P&WC has been using data from oil analysis to give customers actionable insights into engine health, helping optimize their maintenance planning, and maximize aircraft availability.
The service may be included in P&WC pay-per-hour engine maintenance programs, such as ESP™ and FMP™, depending on the circumstances. Using it is simple. First, operators ask for a sampling kit. After receiving it, they take a sample of their engine oil—typically once a year or every 300 to 400 flight hours — and return it for analysis. Based on the findings from the raw data, P&WC will then issue recommendations.
Customers can easily check the relevant information at a glance in their oil analysis dashboard on the MyP&WC Power portal. The dashboard color-codes each engine as green, yellow or red based on its status, provides a fleet-level view across all engines, and delivers actionable maintenance recommendations, varying from increased sampling frequency, targeted borescope or filter inspections to, when appropriate, proactive engine maintenance before a developing issue leads to an in-service event.
Combining Extensive Data with OEM Expertise
While various companies offer oil analysis of some kind, P&WC’s technology stands apart. “What makes us different is that we combine more than a decade of experience and millions of particle-level data points with our expertise as an OEM,” says Andy Kim, Product Manager – Oil Analysis Technology.
“We are truly unique because we are the only engine oil analysis technology which monitors at the alloy level. We don’t just tell you tell how many iron particles are in the engine oil — we tell you which type of components the particles come from.”
Andy Kim, Product Manager – Oil Analysis Technology
What’s more, Oil Analysis Technology is backed by P&WC’s OEM expertise. The service and recommendations delivered are supported by collaborating with P&WC engineering, engine program and customer support teams, as appropriate to each case. This connection brings customers closer to the teams that know their engines best, enabling timely access to OEM expertise when further investigation, technical guidance or maintenance action is required.
Leveraging Feedback to Enhance Dashboard Visuals
Oil Analysis Technology continues to evolve, as does the way P&WC shares its findings. This continuous improvement is driven by feedback about what users like and areas where they want to see improvements.
“We really care about customer feedback,” emphasizes Andy. “We regularly get in touch directly with operators to have a deep dive on how they’re using our products and integrating the information into their maintenance activities. We want to translate those insights into a functioning set of virtual tools that enable customers to be self-sufficient.”
Based on recent feedback, P&WC is currently working on a suite of changes that will further improve the user experience through enhanced dashboard visualizations.
“The new features will give operators greater visibility into each oil analysis result and a more in-depth understanding of the components and materials being monitored. They will make engine information more transparent and easier to keep track of, empowering customers to use it as they see fit to plan their maintenance.”
