The Air Traffic Navigation, Integration, and Coordination System, or ATNAVICS, is the world's only fully autonomous, highly mobile, combat-proven, International Civil Aviation Organization compliant, complete Ground Controlled Approach (GCA) system that is transportable in a single C-130 aircraft.
ATNAVICS provides 24/7 air traffic control and surveillance capabilities for the safe, orderly and efficient movement of military and civil aircraft in all weather conditions. The system provides air traffic services for the rapid deployment of troops and equipment to remote locations and in support of humanitarian missions. Designed for expeditionary operations, ATNAVICS continues to evolve through software and hardware enhancements that increase mission effectiveness, operational flexibility and resiliency while building on its proven, fielded architecture.
ATNAVICS vehicles
The ATNAVICS radar vehicle contains all the electronics and antennas for three radars, which are integrated on a removable pallet, an S-Band Primary Surveillance Radar, an L-Band Secondary Surveillance Radar/Identification Friend or Foe, and an X-Band Precision Approach Radar.
As part of ongoing system modernization, ATNAVICS supports Airport Surveillance Radar (ASR)-only operations when precision approach services are not required. This capability allows the surveillance radar to align the system independently so the precision approach radar can remain stowed during deployment. The result is greater operational flexibility, allowing operators to position the radar for optimal airspace coverage while reducing power consumption and electromagnetic emissions. Operators can configure the system for a wider range of mission requirements, supporting greater operational resiliency across expeditionary, contingency and humanitarian operations.
The operations vehicle provides the necessary equipment to support two air traffic control positions and one supervisor position inside the integrated S-788 shelter and can be located up to 3,200 feet away from the radar vehicle. The operations vehicle can also support six additional external ATC positions.
This architecture enables integration with broader air traffic management and command-and-control systems, supporting the sharing of airspace information across joint and coalition operations.
